Pastel painting of a cowboy, hands on saddle horn

Patt Sharpe

Pastel

I was an art major many years ago, but still consider myself a late starter, when in 2007 I was introduced to the pastel medium. I fell in love instantly! I like the control and forgiveness pastels allow and am drawn to subjects with distinct and varied textures.

Most often I will make a base coat for my paintings by using a wash of complimentary colors to the subject matter. This leaves a thin coat of color over which many layers of pastel can be added. As I paint an effort is made to let some of the original wash show through, which gives the piece an added dimension. Ultimately what I am after is a variety of textures that add interest and depth to a flat surface.
